STEVEN M. BAY – Principal Scientist

EDUCATION:

B.S., Marine Biology, California State University, Long Beach, 1976

M.S. Biology, California State University, Long Beach, 1982

AREAS OF EXPERTISE:

Bay directs research to understand the effects of contaminants on aquatic life and to develop toxicity test methods having improved sensitivity and ecological relevance. His current research includes projects to develop sediment quality assessment methods, improve Toxicity Identification Evaluation (TIE) methods, evaluate the impacts of contaminants of emerging concern on fish, and develop molecular methods to improve environmental monitoring. Bay also works closely with California environmental management agencies to improve approaches for water and sediment quality assessment. Current activities in this area include a multi-year project to develop the technical foundation for assessing sediment quality in bays and estuaries as part of the sediment quality objectives program for the California Water Resources Control Board. Bay’s diverse experience and training includes molecular toxicology, bioaccumulation modeling, statistical analysis, invertebrate taxonomy, field biology, animal culture, physiology, and radioisotope techniques.
