Ananda Ranasinghe

Ananda Ranasinghe is a quantitative biologist specializing in the ecology of organisms living in estuarine and marine sediments. He received his undergraduate degree in Zoology, with honors, from the University of Sri Lanka in Colombo in 1975 and a master's degree in Marine Science (Biology) from the University of Alabama in 1983. He has worked on developing measures of benthic community health for bays and estuaries for the State of California's Sediment Quality Objectives, identifying naturally occurring benthic assemblages in U.S. west coast bays and estuaries, and assessing benthic condition in the Southern California Bight in 1998, 2003, and 2008. Previously, he was a senior scientist at Versar, Inc., in Columbia, Maryland where he led the State of Maryland's Chesapeake Bay Benthic Monitoring Program and developed ecological indicators to assess the condition of aquatic resources.
