J. ANANDA RANASINGHE - Senior Scientist
EDUCATION:
M.S., Marine Science (Biology), University of Alabama, 1983
B.S. with Honors, Zoology, University of Sri Lanka, 1975
AREAS OF EXPERTISE:
Mr. Ranasinghe is a quantitative benthic ecologist who specializes in development of ecological indicators to assess resource condition in aquatic ecosystems. After joining SCCWRP in 1999, he led the team developing measures of benthic community health in bays and estuaries to implement the State of California’s Sediment Quality Objectives. He also led teams that identified naturally occurring benthic assemblages in U.S. west coast bays and estuaries, and assessed benthic condition in the Southern California Bight in 1998, 2003 and 2008. He continues to develop benthic indices for previously unassessable habitats, and recently collaborated with U.S. east coast and European benthic ecologists to explore the potential for unifying benthic index assessment scales across geographies. He is participating in teams exploring enhancement of benthic assessments through sediment profile imaging, identifying benthic organisms by DNA bar-coding, and applying European benthic indices locally. Prior to joining SCCWRP, he was a key person in U.S. EPA efforts to develop benthic indices for the Chesapeake Bay, the New York/New Jersey Harbors complex, and U.S. east coast estuaries from Massachusetts to Virginia. He also led efforts to develop a benthic index applicable to estuaries from Delaware to North Carolina, and to optimize the Chesapeake Bay benthic index and extend it to tidal freshwater habitats.
As Program Manager for the State of Maryland's Chesapeake Bay Benthic Monitoring Program, Mr. Ranasinghe used the Chesapeake Bay index to assess the condition of sub-regions, quantify trends, and identify probable causes for improvements and declines. He also assessed the extent of stressed benthic resources and identified associations between living resource condition and sources of stress for the Maryland Governor’s Council on Chesapeake Bay. Mr. Ranasinghe is familiar with benthic infauna of the east, west, and gulf coasts and has pursued his interests in community ecology using several multivariate statistical community analyses. He also worked with others to provide ecological classifications for benthic organisms. He developed several data entry systems incorporating unique QA/QC checks to ensure that databases accurately reflected field and laboratory data. He also led or participated in several projects evaluating the effects of dredging and dredged material placement, and helped assess the variability and monitoring implications of benthic toxicant effects and contaminant body burdens in the New York Bight. Mr. Ranasinghe earned an undergraduate degree in Zoology, with honors, from the University of Sri Lanka. He earned his M.S. degree in Marine Science (Biology) from the University of Alabama, completing his M.S. research on “A comparison of techniques to characterize benthic macroinfaunal communities of middle Mobile Bay, Alabama” at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab.
