DAVID T. TSUKADA - Senior Research Technician

EDUCATION:

B.S., Marine Biology, California State University, Long Beach, 1975

AREAS OF EXPERTISE:

David is responsible for processing all samples and keeping the Chemistry laboratory maintained and in operational order. He is knowledgeable in all organic extraction procedures for sediment, tissue and water samples including use of the Elemental analyzers (Total organic carbon, Dissolved organic carbon). He is responsible for the development and production of SPME (Solid Phase Microextraction) and PED (Polyethylene Device) sampling devices for use in field applications. He is also responsible for conducting experiments for method validation and updating all standard operating procedures. He is heavily involved with field work at sea and on land which includes sediment sampling, fish and invertebrate collecting, identification of the species, water quality sampling (sea/river), deployment of various instruments at sea and air sampling.

With 20 years of experience, he is knowledgeable about all aspects of sampling soft bottom marine communities. His experience includes supervision of day to day operations in the benthic laboratory; oversight of field operations, assuring that samples for biological and chemical analysis are properly collected and transported; and laboratory processing of biological samples, including quality assurance and quality control. He has helped to develop and implement procedures for sorting, measuring and identifying benthic grab samples. David has taxonomic expertise in Mollusca and Ophiuroidea and extensive knowledge of other groups, including Arthropoda, Polychaeta, and Echinoderms. In addition to his responsibility for chemistry operations and previous experience with benthic operations, David has performed other laboratory analyses, including analysis of sediment grain size and total volatile solids. He has assisted in sediment toxicity experiments on marine invertebrates and dissected fish and invertebrates for analysis of tissue contaminants.
