Dr. Keith Maruya

Keith A. Maruya is the outgoing head of SCCWRP’s Chemistry Department and an environmental scientist who specializes in the analysis, fate and effects of trace contaminants in aquatic systems. He obtained his B.S. in chemical engineering in 1983 and M.S. in environmental engineering in 1986, both from the University of Southern California, and his Ph.D. in environmental engineering science from the University of California, Berkeley in 1995. Dr. Maruya joined SCCWRP in 2005. He currently directs research that focuses on relevant, cost-effective measurement of bioactive contaminants, and prioritization of unregulated chemicals for future monitoring, assessment and research.

Areas of Expertise

Prior to joining SCCWRP in 2005, Dr. Maruya was a faculty member at the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography where, in addition to the research described above, he mentored students from the U.S. and abroad, and taught courses in environmental analysis, contaminated sediment geochemistry and coastal oceanography. Currently, Dr. Maruya is directing research to (1) identify and prioritize CECs for water quality monitoring across California, (2) develop bioanalytical and non-targeted methods for monitoring and assessment of CECs in recycled and ambient receiving waters, and (3) develop and field test passive sampling methods (PSMs) to characterize the occurrence, fate and transport of sediment-associated POPs and CECs..
