Abstract:
The Western Pilot-Coastal Monitoring is a large-scale, comprehensive environmental monitoring strategy designed to provide regional characterization of estuarine conditions along the Pacific Coast of the United States.
Purpose:
The purpose of this table is to contain all of the station information including geographic location label, position information (latitude/longitude), and statistical information (hex size and strata).
Supplemental_Information:
OVERVIEW: In 1999 the US EPA contracted the states of Washington, Oregon, and California to conduct a West Coast Estuary survey. There were 210 stations in the sample design, 18 of which were not able to be sampled for a total of 192 successful measurements. DATA TYPES: Grabs, Trawls, and Water Quality casts were conducted at each of the stations to yield Benthic infauna, Sediment Toxicity, Sediment Chemistry, Trawl Fish, Macro Invertebrate, Debris, water column characterization at one meter increments from surface to bottom, and sediment grain size data. These data types can be aggregated using the StationID variable in each table. These are the selected station locations. These represent the location that was supposed to be sampled.

Methodology_Description:
The overall design for the program is based on EPA-EMAP's sampling approach that uses Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to probabilistically generate sampling locations (Bourgeois et al, 1998). Base sites for the 1999 Coastal Monitoring (small estuaries/tidal rivers) will be evenly distributed through the three participating states of Washington, Oregon , and California; each state will have 50 randomly selected sites. In addition, two specific areas, Tillamook Bay, OR and the small streams of Northern California, have been designated for special studies in which an intensified sampling design of 30 sites/area will be utilized. There are three phases to WPCM: field collection of environmental data and samples, laboratory analyses of samples, and data analysis and assessment
