Dr. Heiko Schoenfuss

Dr. Heiko L. Schoenfuss is an evolutionary morphologist who specializes in aquatic toxicology using fish as indicator organisms. Combining field-based and laboratory studies, he integrates multiple levels of biological organization into environmentally relevant data matrices. His studies have focused on contaminants of emerging concern, including endocrine disrupting chemicals. Additionally, he has maintained a long-term research focus on the endemic stream fauna of Hawai'i to chronicle long term evolutionary and short term anthropogenic change in these unique watersheds.

Dr. Schoenfuss received his B.S. in biology from the University of Bayreuth, Germany in 1991, a M.S. in Veterinary Anatomy from Louisiana State University, and Ph.D. in Evolutionary Morphology from the same institution in 1997. After 20 years as a professor at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, he joined SCCWRP as a visiting scientist in 2020.
