AREAS OF EXPERTISE:

Dr. Kessouri has worked on several different types of ocean biogeochemical models. He has been a part of multiple observation programs in the Mediterranean Sea, studying the deep convection process, fronts and eddies dynamics, and their impact on the nutrient distribution and plankton responses. His Mediterranean Sea projects include: (1) Dewex, a regional deep-ocean experiment in the northwest, (2) MOOSE, a long-term survey of the evolution of the northwest deep sea, (3) Amico Bio, a study investigating the effects of implementing different open boundary conditions on regional 3D biogeochemical ocean models, and (4) SIMED, a whole-basin-scale physical biogeochemical modeling effort to study long-term budgets. Dr. Kessouri’s computer modeling work includes calibration and development of the oxygen compartment for the biogeochemical model Eco3mS, which has been used for different Mediterranean plankton ecosystem studies. During this work, Dr. Kessouri was involved in coupling Eco3mS with the physical model SYMPHONIE for the small scale at very high resolution, and with NemoMed12 for larger-scale and lower resolution. He also coupled Eco3mS to the physical model NEMO.

In a strong collaboration between the modeling teams of the University of California in Los Angeles and the University of Washington with the SCCWRP, his modeling efforts focus on downscaling the ROMS-BEC (Regional Ocean Model System and the Biogeochemical Elemental Cycles) model along the US West coast to provide realistic view of nutrients transports at very high resolution including the submesoscale effects in nutrients fluxes. Dr Kessouri is also working on implementing new generation of ocean physical biogeochemical models with full anthropogenic records into the model to understand the effects of the nutrients and atmospheric carbon inputs on the evolution of the California Current Ecosystem.
